At the end of January into February, Dr. Emde & his family traveled with the high school students from Greeneville Adventist Academy (GAA) to the Dominican Republic. They worked in a suburb of Santo Domingo called La Caleta. The team went with Maranatha International which works in many countries all over the world digging wells, building churches, and schools. Sometimes they provide medical/dental/vision care to those in need if they have someone on their team of volunteers who can do this for those in need.
On this trip, the team had 3 different projects. One team laid the block walls and roof for a new church in the Caleta district. Another team went with Dr. Emde to 7 different locations and saw 970 patients! Approximately 940 glasses and 550 sunglasses were dispensed to those in need! The students not only gave health talks to those waiting to get into the vision clinic, they also preached an evangelistic/revival meeting each night along with children's stories. Each student rotated between the construction and vision teams so they could experience both. The 3rd project was that the vision team went back to one of the churches they had done a vision clinic in the previous week and painted it inside and out because the church did not have enough money to have it re-painted. It was not only a blessing to meet and help those in need, but also to see the beautiful country of the Dominican Republic.
